# Hostess bar etiquette: what to expect on a first visit

What the service is, lady drinks, reading the bill, and tipping.

## What a hostess bar is, and is not

A hostess bar is a place where you buy a drink, a room and someone’s company in conversation. The hostess sits with you, pours, talks, sings and keeps the evening moving. That is the service. It is companionship and conversation, and nothing beyond that is offered or implied.

Being clear about that up front is not prudishness — it is the thing that makes the room work. Everyone in it, staff and guests, is operating on the same understanding, and the evening is more relaxed for it.

## The basics

- Guests must be 18 or over.
- The hostess is at work. Warmth is part of the job; it is not a signal about anything else.
- Ask before photographing anyone. In most venues, photographing staff is not allowed at all.
- If you would like a different hostess, say so quietly to the staff. It is a normal request and nobody takes offence.
- Do not touch without invitation. This is the one rule with no soft edges.

## Lady drinks

At some point your hostess will be offered a drink, and you will be asked whether to buy it. This is the standard mechanism by which she earns, and buying one is the ordinary thing to do. It is also entirely acceptable to decline, or to buy one and not another. A venue that pressures you on this is telling you something about itself.

At Barbie Bar the lady drink prices are on the published rate card, so you can see the cost before you agree to it rather than after.

## Paying

Ask for the bill whenever you like, itemised. You should be able to see the room or package, your drinks and any lady drinks as separate lines. If a number surprises you, ask about it at the table — that is easier than raising it later.

Know the charging basis before you order. Room and package prices are usually quoted per person, so a group bill is a multiple, not a flat fee. Confirming this early prevents the most common misunderstanding of the evening.

## Tipping

Tipping is not required in Vietnam and no one will chase you for it. It is common and appreciated for good service, and there is no expected percentage.

## Singing

You will be handed a microphone. You do not have to be good — the room is not a competition, and the hostesses will sing with you if you would rather not go alone. Most KTV systems carry Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English catalogues, so bring a song you actually know.

## If something feels wrong

Say so, to the staff, at the time. A well-run venue would much rather fix a problem in the room than have you leave unhappy. If a place will not quote you a price, will not itemise a bill, or pressures you into spending, leave. There are enough venues in District 1 that you never have to stay in one that is working against you.

## The numbers, at a glance

- Open daily 8:00pm to 2:00am, later by arrangement — 20:00 to 02:00, seven nights a week.
- Guests must be 18 or over.
- A VIP room with no drinks and no hostess is 500,000 VND per person for one hour.
- Packages run from 1,500,000 VND per person for one hour to 3,200,000 VND per person for three hours, each including a hostess plus soju, beer and soft drinks.
- Prices are per person, not per room — a party of four on the three-hour package is 12,800,000 VND.
- Languages you’ll commonly hear: Japanese, Korean, Chinese, English. We don’t guarantee a specific person.
- Payment in VND or USD, by cash, card or bank transfer. VAT, service charge and card fees sit on top of the published rates.
