# Le Thanh Ton and Japantown: a Saigon nightlife guide

The alleys off Le Thanh Ton: hours, languages, and how to find them.

## Where Japantown actually is

Saigon’s Japantown is not a district on any map. It is a cluster of narrow alleys — hem — running off Le Thanh Ton street in Ben Nghe ward, District 1, roughly between Hai Ba Trung and Thai Van Lung. Walk the length of Le Thanh Ton and you will pass the entrances without noticing them: an unmarked gap between two shopfronts, a corridor of signage in Japanese, and then a lane that opens into a dense stack of small bars, izakaya, ramen counters and karaoke rooms.

The area grew around the Japanese expatriate community that has worked in Ho Chi Minh City for decades, and it still keeps roughly Japanese hours and Japanese conventions. That is why it feels different from the Bui Vien backpacker strip fifteen minutes away — it is quieter, more inward-facing, and built around regulars rather than passing trade.

## What a night here looks like

The rhythm is later than most visitors expect. Restaurants fill from around 7pm, bars from 9pm, and the karaoke rooms are busiest between 10pm and 1am. Barbie Bar opens at 8pm and runs until 2am, with later reservations by arrangement.

Venues are small. A bar with twelve seats is normal, and a room that holds six is a large one. This is not a strip you crawl through at speed; the convention is to settle somewhere and stay.

## Finding the alleys

The two most useful landmarks are the numbered alley entrances themselves. Addresses here read like 15B/98 Le Thanh Ton — the number after the slash is the building on the street, and the part before it is the unit inside the alley. If you are looking for a specific venue, the alley number matters more than the street number, and a map pin will usually put you at the mouth of the lane rather than at the door.

Taxi and ride-hailing drivers know Le Thanh Ton well. Ask for the street and the nearest cross street rather than the full alley address, then walk the last thirty metres.

## Language

Japanese is the working second language of the area, and Korean is close behind. English is widely understood in the bars that see visitors. At Barbie Bar the languages you’ll commonly hear are Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English. We don’t guarantee a specific person.

## Practicalities

- Cash in VND is the smoothest way to pay. USD is widely accepted; card and bank transfer are usually available but attract VAT and a card fee.
- Most venues here are 18+. Bring ID if you look like you might be asked.
- Book ahead at weekends. The rooms are few and they fill.
- Dress is smart casual. Nobody will turn you away for a t-shirt, but the room skews tidy.

## How this differs from the rest of District 1

Bui Vien is loud, young and street-facing. Thao Dien across the river is residential and expatriate. Japantown sits between the two: hospitality-led, conversation-led, and organised around private rooms rather than dance floors. If what you want is a table where you can hear the person opposite you, this is the part of the city to be in.
